The Guide: Easy Steps to Understanding and Resolving Payment Declines
No need to memorize codes. Here’s how to recognize and handle the most common credit card errors in RazorSync
1. Understand What the Error Means
- When a card is declined, RazorSync displays a helpful error code and message.
- These codes offer clues as to why—and what to do next.
2. Take Quick Action Based on the Code
Here’s a rundown of the most common errors SMB owners see:
- 200–201: “Transaction Declined/Do Not Honor”
The bank simply won’t process the charge. Ask your customer to contact their bank or provide a different card. - 202: “Insufficient Funds”
Your customer’s account needs more money. Let them know and suggest trying another card or method. - 203: “Over Limit”
The charge exceeds their card’s daily withdrawal limit. Suggest they contact their bank or use a different card. - 223–224: “Expired Card/Invalid Expiration Date”
The card’s shelf life is up, or the expiration info may have a typo. Ask your customer to update with a valid card. - 225: “Invalid Security Code”
A simple typo or an incorrect CVV. Have your customer double-check and retry. - 250–253: “Lost/Stolen/Fraudulent Card”
These cards have been flagged as dangerous. Let your customer know—their bank can explain and help them fix it.
3. Offer Fast Solutions
- Reach out to your customer to get a new form of payment.
- If needed, have them call their bank to approve the charge.
- Once anything is fixed, retry the payment.
4. Keep Communication Professional
- Show empathy: “Hey, sometimes banks are just extra cautious. Let’s try another card or have you call your bank for a quick fix!”
